IMEG was hired by a light & flag pole manufacturer to develop time standards of a paint line that produces a variety of products.
THE PROBLEM
Previous paint line standard times were outdated and under-developed
The paint line's capacity was unknown to the customer
A second paint line was being considered without data to support the purchase
standard time development
THE PLAN
Develop a product matrix to identify and group similar product types based on how they are loaded onto the paint line's load bars
Perform time studies on all cyclical work activities on the paint line for each product group
Complete work sampling studies on all non-cyclical activities on the paint line for each product group
standard time development
THE RESULTS
Determined total throughput times, the target load and unload cycle times, and the target wrap cycle times
Conducted work sampling studies to determine the efficiency of the paint system
Compared the total throughput times and efficiency calculation to the total parts produced over a given time frame to ensure the accuracy of the newly developed standard times
Recommendations provided for improvement of visual management, operating efficiency, and load bar utilization
