IMEG was hired by a custom engineering brush manufacturer to optimize their current facility layout to accommodate additional equipment and improve productivity. Their location employs twenty people in a 34,000 square foot facility.
THE PROBLEM
No existing facility layout in AutoCAD
Limited space to allocate for additional equipment in current facility
Need to maximize floor space, minimize travel distance, and improve material flow
Determine if existing plant can be rearranged or if they need to expand to include additional equipment
plant analysis
THE PLAN
Field measure building walls, columns, door locations, utilities, equipment locations, raw materials, in-process materials, finished goods, and the site plan
Create current facility layout in AutoCAD
Develop 4 plant layout options to include additional equipment
Calculate floor space and travel distance for each layout option
Develop plant layout analysis to compare current and proposed layouts to determine best option
optimizing current facility layout
THE RESULTS
Determined the ideal layout to meet the customer needs based on plant layout analysis
Each proposed layout shows improvement to 91.8% value added floor space and 8.2% non-value-added floor space
Over 400 square feet of floor space made available for additional manufacturing equipment
All proposed layouts show larger travel distance driven by added manufacturing equipment, but all manufacturing space has improved material flow and direct access to forklift aisles
